WhatsApp is developing support for Android notification bubbles, a feature that would let chats appear as floating icons on screen so users can jump into conversations without fully leaving the app they are using. The feature was spotted in a recent WhatsApp beta build by WABetaInfo, and 9to5Google separately reported that WhatsApp appears to be adopting Android’s native bubble system rather than building a separate Messenger-style overlay.

What Android Notification Bubbles Actually Do

Android’s bubble feature keeps a conversation accessible as a small floating shortcut on top of other apps. When tapped, the chat opens in a compact floating window, making it easier to reply while browsing, watching videos, or using another app. According to WABetaInfo’s report, WhatsApp’s implementation is meant to make messaging feel more immediate and better integrated with the Android system.

This is a notable shift because WhatsApp’s older popup notifications are no longer available on Android 10 and above, according to WhatsApp’s own help documentation. Moving toward Android’s bubble framework would give WhatsApp a more modern replacement for quick-access conversation overlays on current Android versions.

The Feature Appears to Be in Testing, Not Fully Released Yet

Right now, the evidence points to testing and development, not a wide public rollout. WABetaInfo says the feature was found in beta and is still being worked on, while 9to5Google describes WhatsApp as “working on” bubble support. That means users should treat this as an upcoming feature rather than something broadly available today.

There is also no official WhatsApp blog post or help-center announcement yet confirming a general release date. So the safest framing is that WhatsApp is preparing or testing Android notification bubbles, with rollout timing still unclear.

Why This Could Be Useful for WhatsApp Users

If launched, notification bubbles could make WhatsApp much better for multitasking on Android. Instead of constantly switching back and forth between apps, users would be able to keep important conversations close at hand while continuing whatever they are doing. That is especially useful for people who chat while working, browsing, gaming, or following live content on their phones. This benefit is an inference based on how Android’s bubble system works and how the feature is described in current reporting.

The feature could also help WhatsApp feel more in line with other Android messaging experiences. 9to5Google noted that bubbles are already an established part of Android notifications, even if many apps have not taken full advantage of them.

What to Expect Next

For now, the biggest takeaway is simple: WhatsApp is experimenting with a more flexible Android chat experience. If the feature survives testing and reaches stable release, it could become one of the app’s more practical usability upgrades on Android in 2026. But until WhatsApp confirms availability, supported Android versions, and rollout timing, users should view notification bubbles as an in-development feature rather than a guaranteed near-term update.
